Thank you guys for participating in the Asian American Medical Society’s first forum! Allow me to introduce myself again. I am Elleen Xue, president of AAMS and a rising senior at Blair Academy in New Jersey. I am interested in becoming a surgeon, and possibly focusing in the specialty of neuro or reconstructive surgery. My co-host, Eddie Zhang, is both the vice-president and a rising junior at the St. Andrew's School in Delaware. He is interested in neuroscience and biomedical research. In summary, Eddie and I were both extremely impressed with everyone's focus and liveliness towards our guest speakers, Dr. Xue and Dr. Zhang.
Dr. Xue’s presentation underlined how Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the world, yet its underlying mechanism remains elusive, and no effective treatment is currently available. He has established a Drosophila AD model exhibiting multiple AD-like symptoms by expressing the full-length human APP, and performed genetics and drug screens to search genes involved in AD and therapies to cure the disease. Dr. Xue also shared some information about his journey studying overseas in both Switzerland and the United States.
Dr. Zhang centered around his job as an interventional cardiologist. He also shared his previous experience studying abroad in the United Kingdom, which gives comprehensive insight to potential medical students. During the Q&A session with Dr. Zhang, participants got a better understanding of ways to prepare for their future career paths in both internship practice and academic research.
