As a high school student, what can I do to prepare for the medical path?
Itβs commendable that you consider the medical path this early, willing to shoulder the responsibility of medical professionals and learn the knowledge that can better the world. At this stage, you are encouraged to gain a basic understanding of human biology and medical practices while familiarizing yourself with the medical path. Some resources are Khan Academy (yes, it has a full courseware for MCAT! Take a look), Crash Course (it has an Anatomy & Physiology video series by Hank Green), AAMC (aamc.org), etc.
If you want to dive into a subject in medical science (such as Anatomy & Physiology), here is a list of advanced-level textbooks and multimedia:
- Campbell Biology by Urry et al. This textbook introduces many (if not most) foundational concepts of biology, without too much emphasis on diseases, though.
- Fundamentals of Pathology by Husain A. Sattar, in contrast, is purely on diseases. It is better known as Pathoma; Dr. Sattar also created a video series in adjunct to this book.
- Osmosis.org is an excellent study platform for medical students. It creates really reader-friendly guides and diagrams.
- Professor Dave Explains is a YouTube channel (or maybe, Britannica). It covers most courses you must take during pre-med, explaining really tough concepts in an engaging language.
A piece of advice: communicate with your peers and constantly gain inspiration!
